FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Durham, NC - December 2013
Kids excited to explore the Best of Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys exhibit during the holidays at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham can try their hand at building their own mechanical sculpture with a chance to win a special one-hour session designing creations with artist Steve Gerberich. The #GetGerboized Contest runs through February 12, 2014 with the artist workshop scheduled for Sunday, February 23, 2014.
Most children happily create two-dimensional artwork and produce drawings and paintings by the dozen. To push their artistic ability to the next level and expand projects, this contest encourages young Springs and Sprockets enthusiasts to try three-dimensional art projects and incorporate movement.
Brooklyn-based artist Gerberich's mechanical sculptures have been featured at the Museum six times in the past ten years; a visitor favorite featuring over-sized sculptures made of old toys, kitchen utensils, motors, and nostalgic objects like rubber chickens and pink flamingos rescued from the dust bin. "We were a family of pack rats so I learned to teach myself how to motorize a ll these things lying around using simple mechanics. I can't wait to see what imaginative gadgets kids come up with," said Gerberich.
To enter, build a "whatchamacallit" like Steve Gerberich, send the Museum a picture of your amazing creation using #GetGerboized via the Museum's Facebook or Twitter pages. Entries may also be submitted by email to email@example.com. For complete details and inspiration: http://lifeandscience.org/visit/events/sprockets.

Three winners will be chosen by Steve Gerberich, judged on creative use of materials and moveable fun and announced on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 12pm. Winners and three of their guests will enjoy a one-of-a-kind workshop with artist Steve Gerberich Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 2:00pm.
"Pressing the buttons capture children's attention making them believe they created the beautiful chain of events that follow...genius artist puzzle." - Melanie Busbee, Museum member and exhibit visitor.
