Get Involved | 2013 Summer Youth Volunteers

Duties

Volunteers work with our Summer Camps, supporting the informal science education led by paid staff.  You will prepare the classroom for the day, help the Educator and Assistant with classroom management and work directly with the kids on a wide variety of experiment, projects and activities.  You will help provide a fun and safe environment while helping campers explore science!

Requirements

  • All volunteers must be at least 12 years old by June 10, 2013.
  • Applications will be reviewed for experience working with young children, positions of responsibility, indication of ability to work as part of a team and interest in science.
  • Volunteers attending school on a traditional calendar must be able to work two weeks of camp.  The weeks do not need to be consecutive.
  • Volunteers attending school on a year-round calendar must be able to work one week of camp.

  • Camps run June 10-August 23 at the Museum in Durham. We will also offer camps at Rashkis Elementary School in Chapel Hill July 8-August 2. Volunteers get to choose their location as part of the application.
  • Volunteers must work 8:30am-3:30pm, although they may arrive by 8am and stay as late as 5:30pm.
  • All volunteers must attend orientation on Saturday, May 18 at 2pm at the Museum.

Application Process

In order to be considered, applicants must complete the online application (available February 1) and submit two teacher/mentor recommendations no later than 5pm on February 28, 2013.  Application materials received after the deadline will not be considered.

Teacher/mentor recommendations can be from any adult who can speak to the applicant’s maturity, reliability, ability to work in teams and communication skills and who is not related to the applicant.

Selection Process

A list of candidates will be chosen from the completed applications for an interview in March with all decisions made by the end of March.  We usually have about 75 spots available so unfortunately, not every applicant will be chosen.  All volunteers accepted into the program must attend orientation (usually held on a Saturday in May).
