There are six chickadee nestlings, three in the Bungee nest and three in the Sail Boat Pond nest. A fourth egg in the Bungee nest, for whatever reason, failed to hatch.
We now have three bluebird nestlings and 15 eggs in the remaining nest boxes, Cow Pasture, Amphimeadow, Picnic Dome, and Butterfly House boxes. One of the eggs at the Cow Pasture nest hadn’t hatched as of Tuesday (4/29), and one egg that had been in the nest last week was missing.
Here’s the particulars. The Cow Pasture nest had five eggs on the 22nd of April. When I opened the door of the box this week I saw three freshly hatched, young bluebirds and one unhatched egg. I don’t like poking around in the nest longer than I have to, especially on wet, chilly days as was Tuesday, and only see what’s presented to me when I peek inside the box. Could there have been another egg under the hatchlings? Perhaps. We’ll see next week when the birds are further along and the temps a bit warmer.
Although one egg never hatched at the Bungee Jump nest, the nestlings that have busted their way out of the eggs seem to be doing well.
The Sail Boat Pond nest had three nestlings on April 22 and still has three.
Both the Aphimeadow and Picnic Dome nest bluebirds are incubating five eggs each (4/29/14).
And now, the Butterfly House nest. Last week I reported that the female was sitting on eggs and refused to flush when I opened the box. I couldn’t count the eggs. This week, she graciously yielded to me and let me get a peek at what she had been sitting on, four eggs.
Here’s the current tally:
Chickadees – 6 nestlings
Bluebirds – 14 eggs, 3 nestlings
Till next week, have a good one!
