The two cardholders listed on the application will receive membership cards. Cardholders must be adults living in the same household. Only the cardholders are authorized to use the membership card and may not be shared.
If you forget your card, we will accept a photo ID–however, barcode scanning will speed up your check-in and is helpful to everyone, so please be prepared to check in with your card. Also, your card is your passport to discounts in the Museum stores, coffee bar and cafe.
We allow one authorized caretaker to use your membership when bringing your family members. You can add this person at the front desk or by calling the Membership Office at (919) 220-5429 ext. 324. We will need a name, cell phone number and their relationship to your family (e.g. nanny, grandparent, caregiver).
As long as one cardholder is present your group can be anyone you like up to your membership level per day. For example, an Explorer 6 member can bring a total of six people on a visit – cardholder included. Children aged 2 and under are not included in the count.
Our members love the flexibility of admission benefits and often choose a level beyond their family size to regularly host play dates, bring friends or entertain out-of-town guests.
No, you can actually lose membership privileges for sharing a membership with another household. Also, we check in the number of people per visit on your membership, not per membership card.
Yes – since an online purchase requires one business day to process, just show your purchase confirmation with a photo ID at the Front Desk to receive temporary cards.

Yes – just present a valid receipt for that day’s admission and we’ll apply what you paid towards a membership purchase. With 84-acres of exhibit space indoors and out, we know you’ll want to come back again and again!

Museum members can save hundreds of dollars each year when traveling using their membership card through the ASTC Passport Program. For instance, in Chicago, a family of four can save $80 when they visit a single museum and up to $274 when visiting all 5 Association of Science and Technology institutions. Click to see the current list of how much you will save when on your next trip.
Because the ASTC Passport Program is intended as a travel benefit, it is not accepted by museums within 90 miles of your home or home institution.
You may upgrade at any time at the Front Desk or by calling the Membership Office. We do not prorate the difference. Call the Membership Office at (919) 220-5429 x324.
If upgrading with 60 days of your expiration date, we will recognize your new benefit level immediate–you will not lose any months and can enjoy additional time at a higher level!
You may renew as early as you like. – you won’t lose any membership months.
Explorer level members who renew before their membership expires earn an extra month–free! Your free month is automatic and will be reflected on the expiration date of your new membership cards. Just renew before midnight on the day your current membership expires. That’s 13 months for the price of 12, just for renewing on time.
Adult cardholders may check in at the Front Desk and rejoin the rest of their group. Children may not check in using a membership card without an adult cardholder present.
You can arrange for a replacement card at our Front Desk or by calling the Membership Office at (919) 220-5429 x324. There is a $5 replacement fee. Replacement cards should arrive within two weeks and you can receive a temporary card at the Front Desk if you visit before then.
