Photography Workshops

The Museum of Life and Science is partnering with professional photographer, Rick Fisher of Rick Fishers Photography to bring you some exciting and informative photo workshops.

These workshops are both lecture and interactive with opportunities to work alongside a pro as you learn to use your digital camera to capture quality images.

April 19 – June 16Nikon Small World exhibit

Photography Exhibit

The Museum will host an exhibit of the winners of the 2012 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. Come and see the top 20 breathtaking photos taken through a microscope. The Museum is the only North Carolina venue on the North American tour. Free with admission, located in Keva gallery.

Starting Saturday, April 20

Fresh fossils arrive

We’re filling up the Dinosaur Trail dig pit with tons of new fossil dirt. Three rail car loads are coming to the Museum thanks to our friends at Potash Corporation (Aurora, NC), Norfolk Southern Railway Company and the City of Durham. Dig in to find and keep marine fossils 23 to 5 million years old.

Bear Awareness Week

Meet an Animal Keeper at the museum's Bear Overlook and learn about our bears and bears of the world. How do bears fit into our ecosystem? Why is biodiversity important? Learn about this animal whose closest living relatives include seals, weasels and wolves! Keepers will give out bear souvenirs at each program. Different keepers will lead the daily programs so come more than once to increase your knowledge!

Wheels

We’re on a roll at the Museum! Join us as we spend the week exploring things that roll and spin, all while learning the science behind inertia. Clamber through a maze of tractor wheels, climb aboard trucks of all sizes, construct the biggest paper rollercoaster you’ve ever seen and more.

Grab your safety goggles and step into the Lab this summer! Try a different experiment every day, from testing drinks for vitamin C to tinkering with the latest tech toys. Pick up an official Summer Science stamp card to start earning science prizes, and don’t forget to stop by during our science shows and bi-weekly Meet a Scientist program to talk to professional scientists from around the Triangle. Launch rockets or try out your own flying apparatus with wind tubes and helipad tables. Turbo-charge your paper airplane with our launcher and test how far your creations will fly. The new launch lab in our Aerospace exhibit puts you in charge of design and launch!

Come and be surrounded by the magic of one of the world’s largest and most beautiful butterflies! The Butterfly House is turning blue this month as we release a thousand Blue Morphos.

Beat the heat with a supercool science event! Chill out with a misty journey through a miniature city made from bricks of dry ice. Cool off with a cup of liquid nitrogen ice cream, made in minutes before your eyes. Giant blocks of ice make great paintbrushes when you’re creating icy artwork! Don’t let your chance to play melt away with the day – visit early to get the full freeze experience.

National Watermelon Day

What's better on a hot summer day than a slice of cold melon? Celebrate National Watermelon Day with the us as we enjoy special watermelon themed programing and treats at Sprout Café! Bring a melon to share with your favorite Museum animals and learn more about the hot weather care of our animals. Watch the keepers feed frozen melons and watermelon “pops” to our animals then cool off with some melon experiments in the Lab!

Bubble Blitz

Great bubbles, green bubbles, small bubbles, square bubbles! Become a bubbleologist as we study the science behind these soapy water spheres. Discover how a bubble defies gravity, and make your bubble sculptures to take home. Launch a fizzy rocket high into the air, and make your own bubbly beverage.

Wolf Awareness Week

Meet an Animal Keeper at the museum's Wolf Overlook to learn about the very rare red wolf, native to North Carolina, of which there are only 300 alive in the world, with 190 in captivity. All are involved in the Species Survival Program which works in conjunction with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Red Wolf Recovery Program to help restore the species to its native habitat and increase public awareness of the benefits of biodiversity. Take home a wolf giveaway!
